Requirements to Become an MBB Major
The Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (694) major is open to students beyond their first year who have received grades of C or better in courses taken toward the major or by special permission of the undergraduate director. Students should have completed or received Advanced Placement (AP) credit for General Biology (119:115/116/117), General Chemistry (160:161/162 or 163/164), Calculus (640:135 or 151) and at least one semester of Organic Chemistry (160:307 or 315). A grade of C or better in courses credited toward the major is required for graduation.
Procedure to Register for the MBB Major
If you want to register for the MBB major, you must first declare MBB on the Rutgers MyMajor site. You must then make an appointment to meet with the Dept. Undergraduate Director, Andrew Vershon, Waksman Rm 234 (848 445-2905). He will review your transcript and discuss the courses required for the major and your goals after you graduate. You will then meet with the Dept. Undergraduate Secretary, Shalene Montgomery, Nelson A-325 (732 445-3979). She will start a file on you and provide you with the Special Permission Number to declare your major to the registrar on line.
MBB majors are usually SAS students and should sign up for the "694" major instead of 115. Biochemistry (115) majors follow the Biochemistry curriculum of the Department of the Biochemistry and Microbiology at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.
