Welcome to Molecular Biology and Biochemistry!

DeMarco crMajor: Molecular Biology & Biochemistry

How did you decide on your major?

I decided on my major by speaking to my high school AP Biology teacher about what interested me most as I had already narrowed it down to a major in one of the sciences. Once I got to college I spoke to academic and career advisors to see what kind of jobs would be available and what types of courses each major would entail. Through these discussions I was able to choose MBB with confidence.

What is it about your chosen field (and the MBB department) that appeals to you?

The field of molecular biology and the MBB department are constantly changing. Scientists around the world are constantly making breakthroughs that change the way certain research processes are carried out. In courses within the MBB department, the professors are constantly lecturing about the most recent up-to-date papers detailing new technologies and methods that were not around the previous year, let alone the previous semester. This field is never stagnant and that is what appeals to me the most.

Do you have a favorite class/professor within your major?

My favorite class was Proteomics and Functional Genomics with Guy Montelione and Steve Anderson. They are both brilliant professors and present material in an exciting and interesting way. I am also fascinated by proteins and protein structure so this class was perfect for me.

What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?

My favorite academic experiences outside of my major were going to presentations from guest speakers in my field. I also enjoyed going to the Observatory for public viewing nights and seeing the moon and stars through a massive telescope.

What are your other Rutgers activities?

My other Rutgers activities are playing music in a band I founded my first year here at Rutgers. I got to play many shows on and off campus and met so many people through those experiences. In addition I enjoy playing sports with friends in the gyms and out in the fields on any campus.

What are your plans following graduation?

Following graduation I will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Business and Science with a concentration in Biotech and Genomics. I will also be working for BioNanoTech, a startup company based in Hillsborough, NJ.
