Division of Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (LS-SURF)
A stipend of $3500 will be awarded to a number of outstanding students for research undertaken in the summer of 2008. The program is open to declared Life Science majors (119, 146, 447, 694) pursuing novel, independent undergraduate research under the supervision of any Division of Life Science faculty member. Students must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States and be able to provide the appropriate documentation (original Social Security card, Visa, Green card).  Students must work in the lab full-time (40 hrs/week) for a period of 10 weeks.  A written research paper, in the format of an article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, must be submitted at the end of the project period. The complete application form and required materials are due in the Office of Undergraduate Instruction (Nelson Biology Labs, Room B112) by April 2, 2008. Fellowships will be awarded by April 20 and must be acknowledged by the student in writing by April 27.

Waksman Undergraduate Research Fellowship (WURF)
This fellowship is competitive and only available to students that are working with faculty members of the Waksman Institute.  Students will receive a $3,500 stipend for research during the summer.  Attach a curriculum vita, academic transcript (unofficial is OK) and a one page description of the proposed research with the application form.  Applications are due April 8, 2008 to Dr. Andrew Vershon, Waksman Institute.

Integrative Engineered Biointerfaces at Rutgers (IGERT) Undergraduate Research Fellowship The Rutgers IGERT on Biointerfaces has annual Undergraduate Research Frontiers Program called ISURF. The key goals of ISURF are to foster cross-disciplinary research on biointerfaces at the undergraduate level and provide advanced training to undergraduates that participate in the community of biointerfaces. ISURF Program invites applicants from juniors in Sciences and Engineering. Applications are available on-line at the ISURF page and due March 1, 2006.

Research in Science and Engineering (RISE)
This program targets students from underrepresented minorities, students from economically/educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, and those who are the first generation in their families to attend college. Admission to RISE is highly competitive. Students in the program will participate in cutting edge research in the sciences, math, and engineering under the guidance of Rutgers University and the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). and student 20-25 outstanding undergraduates UMDNJ faculty mentors. A substantial stipend and live in free on-campus housing. Application forms are available on line. Admission to RISE is highly competitive and students are encouraged to apply early.

David and Dorothy Bernstein Scholarship for Research
This scholarship provides funding for a research stipend for a member of the Rutgers College Honors Program in support of a ten-week, full-time summer research experience in a laboratory at the interface of biology and the physical sciences.  The recipient will be known as a Bernstein Scholar, and will receive a research stipend in the amount of $3500. Research groups affiliated with the Center for Molecular Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry (http://chmwww.rutgers.edu/%7Embcenter/Faculty.html) and the BIOMAPS Institute (http://biomaps.rutgers.edu/) provide opportunities that blend physical and biological research using advanced technology and methods.  The Bernstein Scholarship for Research thus provides undergraduate students with a truly exceptional opportunity for study. To be eligible to apply, a student must be a Rutgers College student who is a member in good standing of the Rutgers College Honors Program.  (Affiliates are not eligible to apply for this stipend.)  Please note that there are no restrictions in connection with major, class year, or financial need.  Applicants must submit a completed application form, a copy of your transcript printed from Student Online Services, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (preferably someone in a science discipline).

Aresty Research Center for Undergradautes - Summer Science Research Program
The major goal of this program is to help students who have not had any research experience to learn about the process of research early in their academic careers, and encourage them to continue in research activities. There is no minimum GPA required for application (though students must be in good academic standing having demonstrated success in their science courses); the most important criterion is a sincere interest in learning about the process of research in the sciences. We invite rising sophomores (students in the Class of 2009) to apply for one of approximately 15-20 fellowships and research spaces in selected labs. Students accepted as Aresty Research Candidates will spend the summer session, from June 1-August 16, working with a faculty mentor, learning about the process of research in the sciences, and gaining research skills that will allow them to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the participating research labs and that will be useful in any future research endeavors. Each fellow will receive a stipend of $3000 for the duration of the ten week program.  Participants will be expected to live on campus in Hardenburgh Hall unless given special dispensation by the ARC Administrative Director.  Applicants must have completed the first sequence of science courses (Biology 101-102, Chemistry 161-162, Physics 203-204) relevant to the mentor’s project. Special consideration may be given to students who are the first in their families to attend college.   Applications are due Friday, March 10, 2006.  Interviews will be conducted by mentors during the end of March/beginning of April, and fellowship recipients will be announced by the middle of April. New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research Summer Fellowships (NJCCR)
The purpose of the New Jersey summer cancer research fellowship is to provide an opportunity to gain "hands on" laboratory experience for promising students who are interested in pursuing a career as a cancer researcher. The program is designed to encourage students who have not had extensive research experience especially undergraduates students who have not worked on cancer projects prior to applying. Research projects must be specified and should focus on the genetic, biomedical, viral, microbiological, immunological and environmental CAUSES of cancer. Behavioral, epidemiological or clinical/therapeutic research may be considered. However, such studies should focus on malignancies of specific proved or suspected etiologies. The application forms are due in May 4, 2006.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Supplements for Undergraduate Research
The National Science Foundation announces continuation of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, a Foundation-wide program for support of active research participation by undergraduate students. The REU program seeks to expand student participation in all kinds of research by individual investigators, groups, centers, national facilities and others. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: REU Supplements and REU Sites. The REU program is a major contributor to the NSF goal of developing a diverse, internationally competitive, and globally-engaged scientific and engineering workforce. It draws on the integration of research and education to attract a diversified pool of talented students into careers in science, engineering, and educational research related to these disciplines, and to help ensure that these students receive the best education possible. REU Supplements are supported by the various disciplinary and educational research programs throughout the Foundation. The request for an REU Supplement may be made within a proposal for a new or renewal NSF grant or cooperative agreement or as a supplement to an existing NSF award. A Supplement typically provides research experience for one or two undergraduate students. For guidance concerning REU Supplements, please consult the NSF Program Officer who manages the particular research program for the proposal or award.
